 A Three-Phase Approach

This framework is designed to be practical and adaptable. It can be implemented across one semester and revisited throughout the school year.

Phase I: Climate & Policy Audit

Before making changes, we need to understand what students and staff are experiencing.

The Climate & Policy Audit includes:

  • Listening to student perspectives
  • Gathering staff feedback
  • Reviewing school policies for clarity
  • Looking at patterns in attendance and discipline.

 

Guiding question: Where are we intentionally sending mixed messages?

Phase II: Instructional Alignment

Belonging is built in classrooms every day.

 

This phase focuses on:

  • Embedding language objectives across content areas
  • Using materials that reflect students' identities
  • Establishing discussion norms that support respectful dialogue
  • Preparing teachers with language to respond when difficult comments arise

 

This is where consistency begins.

Phase III: Systems-Level Action

For this work to last, it has to move beyond individual classrooms.

 

This phase includes:

  • Creating structures for ongoing family communication
  • Establishing a multilingual learner advisory group
  • Clarifying school-wide expectations
  • Aligning leadership messaging with classroom practice

 

The goal: Make support for multilingual learners part of how the school operates - not an add-on.
